As we celebrate our 50th Anniversary this year, West Elmwood Housing Development Corporation is also completing our Strategic Plan.  As we continue to plan for 2020 and beyond, some organizational restructuring will take place.

As of May 4, 2020, Sharon Conard-Wells has decided to step away from the day-to-day administrative duties of West Elmwood Housing.  Sharon will remain with us as the Director of Special Projects.   We are so very appreciative to Sharon for her many years of service to the organization and the West End community it supports.  And we look forward to her being as amazing, as always, in her new role.

Maria Carvalho, the current Initiative Director for Dunamis Synergy at West Elmwood Housing Development Corporation; Dunamis Synergy is a 2 Generation Initiative supporting parents with young children acquire their postsecondary credential and career-track employment while preparing their children for successful future, will become the new Executive Director of West Elmwood Housing Development Corporation, effective May 4, 2020.

Prior to working at West Elmwood Housing, Maria spent 23 years working for The College Crusade of Rhode Island, most recently as the Director of High School and Post-Secondary Operations for the Rhode Island Gear UP Initiative.  She had a key role in developing and implementing programs and services for underrepresented students that have resulted in increased high school graduation, immediate college going and college-going. She serves on the Board of Sheila Skip Nowell Leadership Academy. Maria is a former Regional Council Member at Large for the College Board.

Maria is a widely respected member of Rhode Island’s college access and success community. In 2017, Maria received the Dr. David B. Swedlow Memorial College Access Practitioner Award of Excellence. She has also received the Leader in Action Award from New England Counselors of Color Bridging Access to College (NECCBAC).

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are extremely excited to welcome Maria as our new Executive Director and have every confidence in her ability to move the agency forward, with her leadership and innovative ideas, while supporting and keeping the community in the forefront.
